This, I understand. My future career that I dream of is both in the fields of 3D animation and video games. I want to be something along the lines of cutscene animator. But I know little to nothing of the career or how to get there. Right now I'm starting to beleive it's impossible for somebody that's not japanese or a billionare. I do know that as long as I get good grades here and there, it'll get me closer to something. Not to mention being a flash animator would be a huge help in getting good with whatever they call the animation in cutscenes.

Yes, it's just a little kid's dream, but it can't be impossible. At least not as much as it might seem. If I grow up to work in any kind of job that's even just a little similar to it, then I'll know that I did good. There's not just cutscene animators, there are character animators and multiple people who come up with designs for everything. I sure as hell can't be picky on the subject.

I have enjoyed video games my whole life. It's not just a hobby, it's not just an addiction. It's a passion. I may as well pray everyday for people such as Shigeru Miyamoto to live on and do what they do for as long as they possibly can. I thank such people for letting video gaming live on even if most games today seem cheap in some way.

Flash is the key to the first step in this long stairway of acheiving such a great career

I agree flash is a great way to get into the whole animation business, because it gives you a understanding of animation in general. 3d is different in the sense that its more work and harder to stylize.

cutscenes dont seem like a thing I would like to do very much or at least 3d because you cant really implement your own style to it. Thats a big problem if you have that big of a team you will have to keep the style repetitive, so you have to stick with the same style that the game has.

But I will say Fable 2 had these really awesome cutscenes. Which do give me some hope that cutscenes can be really cool and worth doing in the end.

As long as you enjoy what you're doing, keep doing it.

And experimenting with different mediums is probably the best thing you could ever make yourself do. I stepped away from Flash for the past couple weeks and picked back up on pencil and paper sketching. I think I made more progress on that medium than I ever had on a computer.

And getting inspiration from other people's work is nothing to feel ashamed about. I originally thought about making 3D games only, but I picked up on Flash game programming because of an artsy 2D game called Odin Sphere. I thought, "If they can do that, then I bet I could, too!" The fact that I'm still learning to program outside of school for the past six months shows that I probably found my niche.

Conversely, I thought that I would truly enjoy making game parodies since I enjoyed watching them. It turned out that it just wasn't for me, which is why I gave up on it.

But all in all, I think it's inevitable to pick up on certain things through what we see and hear. It's a matter of whether or not we actually enjoy doing it if we keep doing it or not.

yeah if you dont enjoy what you do what is the point? You have some good points.

Bah, not being able to implement my own art style is fine. Because I don't have one, and don't really have any need for one. I love art styles. They are often the artist's expressions in another form whether they know it or not. But I am no artist. There is nothing for me to express. I've much more enjoyed comedy animations. From computer animated 3D movies like Shrek or Ice Age, to the wonderful cartoons I grew up watching, it's all so great.

It wasn't until maybe half a year ago when I realised flash isn't so different from 3D animation. I always dreamed of helping make video games and was looking for some thing that I would be good at (you can't just become a director or programmer too easily). I at least know how to make good animation. I've practically taken notes of how video game cutscenes are like. How to give characters the correct emotions even in silence.

I don't know. I just need to figure out how to get to this career. College classes or something. I'll figure it out someday.

We are both 14. We both have a chance at what we want. As long as we can beleive in ourselves and show our "employers" that we're worth a damn, than we could do plenty of things in life. Good luck to the both of us.

/long comments.

Yeah I didnt expect these wall of text's neither. But its always interesting to hear someones opinion.

Long paragraph about how I agree with you even though I wanted to get into game design because I played a game like Halo and wanted to make an UBER EPIC game like them.

(Seriously)

I got into flash when my dad got a pc, I played it saw a video on flash player, used windows movie maker to animate a video. Then continued on to where I am today.

The motivation used to start doesn't stifle your appreciation for it, an appreciation for art also isn't necessary to be a great artist. You should probably try to get into painting though, it's a big deal to art colleges if you're trying to get into that sort of thing.

thats a good point, I guess the way they get into it doesnt matter. But they were talking about going into the field of game development. And they obviously had no knowledge of it they were saying things like "I would like to go into game development and make a game like halo 3 but more bloody" and they were so general about it, they obviously didnt have a passion for any part of game developement they didnt say "I want to be the head developer of an independent gaming company" or "cutscene animation animator" where it gets to the point that the industry seems not artistic or creative at all. That the game design industry is made up of these guys who have no appreciation for it, they just want to make a game so they can play it.

I dont know, Im probably coming off as sort of a dick and a hypocrite but thats what I have to say about that.

too be honest I dont know what colleges look at, Ill probably look into that next year but Im just a freshman in highschool so I have quite a bit of time before I have to look into that. But I think I want to go to an art school, I could learn so much more about art an animation than Im doing by myself.
